Laura de Weijer designs her artworks by digitally distorting famous classical paintings until they become abstract works of art.
She then transforms these artworks into one of a kind pillows using an electric and a pneumatic tufting gun.As she does with all her pieces, she first draws her artworks onto a polyester backing fabricto create a guide before running the tufting gun in close lines up and down the cloth, a time- and labor-intensive process.Using different pile heights, she creates soft en textured landscapes in fluid compositions.Once the tufting is finished, she cuts the excess yarn with scissors and glues the backside so the threads are secured. To finish the pillows she hand stitches a self-made cotton canvas backpiece to the back.
It will take her about two weeks, from start to finish, to complete a batch of six pillows and many kilos of vintage dead-stock yarn.
Unique handmade pieces.
