Ruben Hoogvliet and Gijs Wouters found each other in their fascination for materials, crafts and love for nature during their studies at the art academy ArtEZ in Arnhem. After graduation, they joined forces and experiences in Atelier Fig.
Through experimental processes and innovative designs they create a world of extraordinary
objects. The aesthetic experience creates awareness of the tactility and transformation within the creative process and shows what often remains unexposed. With their work they provide a playful answer to the demand for new and personalised products within the current industry.
Driven by experiment the Project started with rethinking ceramic crafts.
They discovered techniques that would allow them to work more spontaneously and sculptural without the interference of plaster moulds. During this process they developed an alternative method into an innovative craft. Where they dip light moist absorbing structures into liquid clay whereafter they are hang-dried. These structures then completely deform under the weight of the added clay. In this process, gravity always has the final say. This makes the process a continuous back and forth between the natural force and their creative interventions, a fusion of the unexpected and the controllable.
All gravity candleholders are an edition of 100.
