Scheepvaartmuseum | Amsterdam

Located in the Scheepvaartmuseum in Amsterdam, this space already carries a strong presence: defined by height, symmetry, and an abundance of natural light.

Our intervention was minimal. We introduced the Buitenhuis chandelier by Dirk van der Kooij as an addition to the room. Its circular form is suspended within the space, following the existing lines and rhythm rather than interrupting them.

The piece is made from layered recycled plastic, which reveals subtle variations in tone and transparency when lit. These small shifts give the light a soft, almost tactile quality. The LEDs are gently diffused, casting a warm and even glow that enhances the atmosphere without becoming dominant.

Rather than acting as a focal point, the chandelier settles into the architecture. It supports the overall composition, adding depth and a contemporary layer while leaving the historic character fully intact.
