Dirk vander Kooij

buitenhuis | 160cm

Dirk Vander Kooij has evolved 3D printing to serve in the refraction and diffusion of light. The resulting buitenhuis chandelier illuminates in an immersive flood.

Inlaid beneath glasslike ribbons are hundreds of small LEDs. Their luminosity is magnified by the printed structure: exhaling a light that is sprawling yet gentle. Reclaimed synthetics - ranging from CDs to rooftop windows - crystalize as they glow from within.

The halo sustains both circular and angular adjustment. Owing to a bespoke brass suspension system, movement is spontaneous and effortless. Wheel guided steel cables descend to supply electricity and maintain balance.

A series of six separate 3D printed arcs comprise the ring. This dissection animates motion in the chandelier: moving segments tracing change. The gesture can be compared to light painting.

The buitenhuis chandelier is easily dimmable - thankfully.
