Piet Hein Eek

Piet Hein Eek (1967) is a one-man phenomenon in the world of design. Following in the footsteps of iconic designers such as J.J.P. Oud, Gerrit Rietveld, and Chris Lebeau Penaat, Eek has developed a distinct and clear design aesthetic that merges engineering precision with artistic innovation. Known for his exceptional craftsmanship and focus on sustainable practices, Eek transforms reclaimed materials into high-quality, timeless furniture. His creations showcase not only a mastery of design but also a deep commitment to the environment.

The story behind Piet Hein Eek’s unique approach

Piet Hein Eek graduated from the Design Academy in Eindhoven in 1990 with a cupboard made of scrapwood. At a time when design often leaned toward decadence and excess, Eek chose to work with simple, discarded materials and a sober design language. This cupboard marked the beginning of his lifelong commitment to sustainability and craftsmanship, and to this day, the Scrapwood cupboard remains part of his and our collection in its original, unaltered form.

Eek's designs are still recognized for his distinctive use of materials such as scrapwood, aluminium remainders, old doors, and window frames. His work extends beyond furniture; he also designs lighting, accessories, and even interiors for buildings. Major institutions like the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam and the Groninger Museum have honored his groundbreaking work with dedicated exhibitions, cementing his influence in both Dutch and international design.
